The energy transition demands scalable, drop-in alternatives to coal.
Our torrefied biocoal delivers the energy density and operational performance of fossil fuels β together with the carbon-reduction benefits of sustainable biomass.
At Sustera Energia, we develop bankable, industrial-scale facilities producing Japan-grade biocoal, enabling power generators and heavy industry to cut carbon emissions deeply without altering existing infrastructure or supply chains.

We deploy Yilkinsβ patented torrefaction process β reducing energy consumption by up to 50 % compared with conventional systems and ensuring full compliance with Japanβs stringent fuel standards.
Our process is effectively carbon-free, using the same forest-waste feedstock to fuel the torrefaction process itself β creating a fully circular, low-emission energy cycle.
Yilkinsβ technology has been chosen by industry leaders such as Reliance, Heineken, Shell and Tokuyama, underscoring its readiness for global deployment.
The resulting biocoal achieves the highest product quality, with hydrophobic properties nearly equal to fossil coal β ensuring superior durability, storability, and handling performance across global logistics chains.
Japan operates more than 160 coal units, many of which will transition to sustainable biomass co-firing (at least 20 %) from 2030 onward.
Yet no validated, commercial-scale supply of Japan-grade black pellets exists today.
Sustera Energia bridges this gap β supplying certified material for early large-scale testing and enabling utilities to move confidently toward full commercial rollout.

Our flagship project, Sustera One, located in Ulme (Chamusca municipality) β just 15 km from Entroncamento, Portugalβs key inland freight hub β will produce approximately 30,000 tonnes per year of certified Japan-grade torrefied pellets.
Designed for export readiness and replicability, it serves as the proof-of-concept for Susteraβs broader biocoal platform across Europe and Asia.

Our integrated value chain spans technology, EPC, feedstock sourcing, logistics and insurance β implemented through established industrial partners:
Β· Yilkins (technology)
Β· Prodesa (EPC & integration)
Β· Florecha (feedstock & site)
Β· New Energy Risk (insurance).
We utilise existing forest-waste streams β without diverting materials from the food chain or impacting standing forests β as our primary feedstock base.
Together, we ensure project delivery and risk mitigation β from sustainable forest to fuel.

Sustera Energia is led by a cross-disciplinary team with senior executive experience across global energy companies, Japanese industrial groups, and North American private equity.
We unite complementary strengths in engineering, finance, development and technology commercialisation β enabling a disciplined, execution-focused approach to complex energy infrastructure.
Sustera One targets financial close in 2026 and commissioning in 2027. Permitting, detailed engineering and financing workstreams are advancing in parallel β ensuring an efficient, fully bankable delivery.
